Procedure in the Event of a Fire and for
Fire Drill
Alarm
Warning: Prolonged continuous loud buzzing.
Assembly Points: main school playground
In the interests of quick and
effective evacuation of the premises, it is important that all points of exit
are kept clear of congestion at all times.
Entrance door (foyer,
consulting rooms, reception)
Fire door 2/5 (0-2 play area,
training room)
Fire door 3/4 (2-3 play area,
sensory room, resource room)
If it is not possible for any
reason to exit through any of the above, the NEAREST EXIT should be
used.
Anyone discovering a fire
should immediately operate the nearest FIRE ALARM POINT.
When the alarm is heard the
person in charge of groups in the Children’s Centre will take up
registers /relevant documentation and marshal the group in an orderly
manner to the named assembly point by an exit route away from the fire. One
member of the Nursery staff must check areas with in the nursery i.e. sleep
room, toilets.
Administrative staff and
other non-centre staff should immediately make their way to the assembly
point.
No-one is to sweep the
building checking for children /staff after everyone has left the building.
Wherever possible, doors
should be closed after evacuation in order to contain any fire source.
When the alarm sounds anyone
in the following areas e.g. toilets, Staff Room, Nappy changing room and milk
preparation room should go direct to the assembly point by the quickest safe
route and join the appropriate group.
The Nursery Manager or
responsible person will call the Fire Brigade immediately.
Children must walk quickly
and in an orderly fashion to their assembly point.
When groups assemble, a roll
call will take place to ensure that all children/ staff are present. The Nursery Manager will be notified
immediately if there is any person missing who should then notify the school
Head or senior member of school staff of all persons accountable/ missing.
If any person is found to be
missing, the centre premises must be searched thoroughly by Fire Safety
Officers upon their arrival until they are accounted for.
No children / staff must
leave the assembly point to recover clothing or personal property. They must remain there until permission is
given to return to the building by the Nursery Manager or, in the case of fire,
by the officer in charge of the fire.
Staff who have had training
will tackle the fire with available fire appliances pending the arrival of the
Fire Brigade, if this is judged to be safe by the Nursery Manager or person in
charge.

The Nursery Manager will
remain on the main road outside the main school to wait for the Emergency
Services.
REMEMBER:
Safety of children and adults
is the most important priority. The
alarm should be sounded and
Fire Brigade contacted unless
it is absolutely clear that the fire can be safely tackled and contained.
Rationale:
In the event of a fire being
discovered, it is essential that following procedures are understood and
routines are followed promptly and efficiently, to ensure safety of all
children and staff.
Fire drills will include the
placement of a “FIRE” across different entrances, to ensure that
Staff and children learn to
react and adjust to varying situations.
Conclusion:
Staff should discuss fire
safety aspects with children after each fire drill, and also following
Visit’s by the Fire Officer.
It is important that awareness of dangers from fire is regularly brought to the
attention of children.
