FIRST AID POLICY and GUIDEANCE

STATEMENT

The CIC directors acknowledge their responsibility to ensure that within the nursery setting there are sufficient qualified trained First Aiders to deal with accidents and injuries occurring within that setting. Staffs who have volunteered for this role will be required to successfully complete an HSE approved first aid course. Qualified first aiders wishing to continue with their role will be required to attend a refresher course every three years in order to renew their certificate.

All staff are required to record accidents and incidents in line with company procedures. These procedures require the; (Recording of all treatment given, time, date, name and address of the injured person/ child.)

Should anyone have concerns about the provision of first aid within the setting, they should inform a responsible person to enable the directors to review and rectify the situation if necessary.

Most of these accidents will take the form of small bumps, bruises, abrasions or cuts.  Occasionally they can be of a more serious nature, involving accidents resulting in severe bangs to the head, or suspected sprains, fractures and more severe cuts.  These will need prompt and careful treatment and should follow an agreed course of action.

Occasionally, a real emergency may occur, which presents a threat to a person’s/ child’s life and in these instances it is essential that staff understand the need for immediate and appropriate action. In all these cases emergencies services should be summons immediately.

The following information should be used has a guideline in accordance with company policy and procedures when dealing with any accident or incident which requires the administration of first aid by a first aider.

Method

The following procedures will be followed in the event of:-

Major accidents

At all times staff must wear protective clothing (disposable aprons and gloves)

  1. A staff member with first aid certificate will carry out first aid, assess the situation and decide whether the child needs to go immediately to hospital or whether the child can wait for the main parent/carer to arrive.
  2. If the child needs to go straight to hospital an ambulance will be called. Then the main parent/carer will be contacted and arrangements will be made to meet the parent/main carer at the hospital. A member of staff will accompany the child to hospital with copies of the Childs all about me form, which includes permission forms, medical/ dietary history and doctor’s details. The staff member will sign for treatment to be carried out, if permission for this has been given.
  3. The nursery manager and chair of the company will be called.
  4. If the child can wait for the parent/main carer to come, the parent/main carer will be contacted and the child will be made as comfortable as possible. A member of staff will stay with the child until the parent/main carer arrives. It will then be for the parent/main carer to decide whether to go to hospital or not.
  5. A report of the accident will be made on the correct form (Accident form), when the parent arrives, at the hospital or nursery, they will be asked to sign it and will be given a copy.
  6. If the child goes to hospital and receives medical treatment or receives medical treatment or receives medical treatment from a general practioner we will inform OFSTED and RIDDOR of the incident, then carryout/reassess a risk assessment.

Minor incident

At all times staff must wear protective clothing (disposable aprons and gloves)

  1. the injury is assessed by a staff member with a first aid certificate and if necessary the manager is called
  2. the injury is treated
  3. The child is then resettled back into the base room and observed.
  4. The incident is recorded on an accident form, a sticker is placed above their peg saying forms to sign please see your key worker, and then when the parent/main carer collects the child the accident is explained in detail along with treatment given and the parent/main carer is asked to sign and date the accident form.
  5. If a member of staff forgets to get the accident form signed or someone different collects the child, they will contact the parent/ main carer by telephone and explain the accident, the parent/ main carer will then sign and date the form next time they are at the nursery. The key worker will record on the accident form that they have telephoned the parent/main carer and will record the conversation.
